Why is Structural Shoring Important?
Structural shoring can be critical to certain homes or residential properties that are under construction or significant remodeling – specifically, those that face foundation or structural stability concerns. Without shoring, some buildings may be subject to collapse. Therefore, structural shoring prevents accidents and injuries from happening on the job site. Shoring also helps speed the construction process and prevents soil erosion, which can damage nearby structures or even create sinkholes.

Structural Shoring 101
As you can imagine there’s a lot to consider when ensuring safe structural shoring. For instance, we consider soil bearing capacity, proximity to neighboring structures, excavation depth, and the water table before choosing the type and placement of shoring. But there’s even more to it than that.
- Types of Shoring
Types of Shoring There are multiple approaches to construction shoring. Depending on the structure and need, we may turn to shoring techniques such as:
Dead Shoring – Supports dead loads or the structure’s entire weight.
Raking Shoring – This gets its name from attaching sloped pieces of wood, called rakers, to the unstable walls that they are supporting.
Flying Shoring – This type of shoring is placed between parallel walls when one or both walls require additional support.
There is also H and I-beam Shoring, Contiguous Pile Shoring, Secant Pile Shoring, Sheet Pile Shoring, and Hydraulic Shoring, among other types. Trained professionals understand when to use which type of shoring to achieve optimal outcomes.
